Top Ten Calls Received for Dogs at the Pet Poison Hotline

March 19th through the 25th is National Animal Poison Prevention Week. Help keep your pets safe and healthy by following tips and advice to prevent poisoning. Make sure to spread the word, because a healthy pet is a happy pet!

1. Chocolate
2. Insect bait stations
3. Rodenticide
4. Fertilizers
5. Xylitol - containing products such as sugar free gum and candies
6. Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin in brand name or generic form) they are coated in sugar which make them even more attractive to dogs
7. Acetaminophen (Tylenol in brand name or generic form) again they are covered in sugar making them attractive to dogs.
8. Silica gel packs (often found in new shoe boxes and supplements)
9. Amphetamines such as ADD/ADHD drugs
10. Household Cleaners (there are alternatives cleaners which are not harmful to pets)

Many of the items listed are toxic to humans as well so if your pet can get into it chances are your child could too. Make sure to check back throughout the week for more Animal Poison Awareness information.
