Lisa Beattie exercises each day in Cherryville by going on a walk with a friend and her sister-in-law. The animal lovers have made a few four-legged friends along their route, adapting their routine to bring dog treats and show some attention to three dogs who spend their days chained up outside. The women noticed one of the dogs struggling in labor Monday, they took the dog to a veterinarian where she gave birth via Cesarian section to six puppies. “She would’ve been dead. There’s no way that dog could’ve had these puppies,” said Beattie.
Wood, Beattie and Sandy Hamrick befriended the dog, Sweet Pea, during their walks. In addition to giving her milk bones, the women delivered a 15-pound bag of food to the dog’s owners when they found out they had no money to buy it. Prior to Monday, the women didn’t realize just how much care the dog was lacking. And now the women are having a hard time deciding whether or not the owners should regain custody of their pet. Sweet Pea the new momma of 6 is caring for her puppies at the home of one of the women. They just couldn't put her back outside chained to a tree while she was caring for newborns.

Covering the cost of the C-section ran just more than $550 and included getting her spayed after the procedure. “These people want this dog back, but she didn’t have her rabies, she didn’t have her distemper. She had nothing. She had a leash and a collar and was tied to a tree,” said Beattie. The dog’s owners already expressed an interest in not only getting Sweet Pea back but one of her female puppies too.
Despite Sweet Pea’s lackluster life, she has always shown joy, said Beattie. “No matter what her life is like, she’s still a happy dog,” said Beattie. “If she got fed, fine, if she didn’t she was still happy.”
