Dog Fighting in Philadelphia Rampant

The following article is not a surprise to me and I don't know why it would be a surprise to anyone else. Look who the state puts up as one of their hero's as someone they revere and look up to and allow their children to idolize. Sorry but allowing a certain unnamed football player into your city was only asking for this sort of problem to get worse not better. I do hope a full scale crackdown can occur through education, awareness, arrests, and any other means necessary to stop this horrible event only monsters engage in.

Animal-fighting reports quintupled since 2008

The number of animal-fighting cases in Philadelphia has exploded in recent years, with five times the number of cases reported last year as in 2008, according to the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Most involved pit bulls, but some cases of cockfighting were included in the statistics, said Sue Cosby, chief executive officer of the PSPCA. The agency said it investigated 237 cases of animal fighting in 2008, 836 in 2009 and 1,177 last year.

The prevalence of dogfighting in Philadelphia has prompted the Humane Society of the United States to launch an "end dogfighting in Philadelphia" campaign, which it will formally announce tomorrow at the Hunting Park Recreation Center.

"We chose Philadelphia because there is a very large need in Philadelphia," said Rebecca Glenn-Dinwoodie, coordinator for the HSUS campaign here. "Dog fighting is very underground, but it's a huge problem that's all over the city."

HSUS launched similar programs in recent years in Chicago and Atlanta. Cosby said that it was impossible to tell whether the skyrocketing number of cases was due to increased awareness in the community or "whether there truly is more dog fighting.

"For many, many years it was a very hidden problem," here and around the country, Cosby said. Hunting Park will be the first area of the city targeted in the HSUS anti-dogfighting campaign, said Glenn-Dinwoodie, who has been working with residents and community leaders there since last year.
Cosby said the PSPCA has " a pretty significant law-enforcement force," but welcomed the HSUS's help with resources. She couldn't provide figures on how many of the cases investigated by the PSPCA were prosecuted.

Cosby said that most often, it's teen and young-adult dog fighters who are "doing this for entertainment." But she noted that professional dogfighting hurts more than the dogs and the thugs who are making them fight. Usually, she said, professional dog fighting also involves large amounts of money, guns and drugs.

Dog fighting is not unique to Philadelphia, Cosby said, and it's nothing new here. PSPCA records going back into the 1800's report cases of dog fighting in Philadelphia, she said.
