Dogs Center Stage at Ski Saftey Week

Avalanche Rescue Dogs Trading Cards Skiers and riders will get a chance to score trading cards featuring avalanche rescue dogs at Aspen/Snowmass this week as part of the National Ski Areas Association's Safety Week.

Ski patrolers will hand out the trading cards throughout the week. The stars include Sienna, Gus and Kaya, rescue dogs at Aspen Highlands; Reina, Dante and Caleb, part of the team at Snowmass; and Booker, Jane and Zoot of Aspen Mountain.

The rescue dogs are part of an online game that can be found at www.aspensnowmass.com/safetygame.

Each of the ski areas will hold various activities during safety week, which goes through Jan. 23. Snowmass will have free binding checks and helmet demonstrations. A safety tent will be located at the top of the Elk Camp Gondola. There will be an avalanche-beacon park set up on Fanny Hill for trials with avalanche gear. There will also be photo opportunities with the rescue dogs.

Customers at Aspen Mountain will have the opportunity to be rescued by an avalanche dog by showing up at the ski patrol headquarters at 10 a.m. every day of Safety Week.

The rescue dog trading cards will be available at the patrol headquarters at Aspen Highlands throughout the week. Visitors can also earn a Hershey's Kiss by answering safety questions correctly at all the chairlifts. The patrol will also hold beacon demonstrations or rescue dog drills through Friday at 11 a.m. outside the Merry-Go-Round Restaurant.
