Public Workers Can Adopt Pets for Free in Daytona Beach, Florida

The Halifax Humane Society in Daytona Beach, Florida knows that every Spring they are inundated with puppies and kittens that are born to pets that have not been spayed or neutered and allowed to breed haphazardly. Not only that but people are turning their pets into the shelter just like they are across the US because they can no longer afford them.

The Halifax Humane Society also knows that people in the community aren't adopting in the numbers they were several years ago due to the economy. Therefore they have a problem. How do they deal with the influx of animals and no homes to send them to? Dogs and cats don't do well in the shelter environment for very long. Those of us who own pets know that we live healthier less stressed out lives with dogs and cats in our home.

The decision was made to allow the dogs and cats to be adopted out to Public workers fully vetted up to date on vaccinations, spayed / Nuetered, and microchip-ed FREE of charge. Public workers including teachers, police, firefighters, and government workers all with proper ID. The regular fee for adoption from this shelter is $70 per animal.

Do you think this is a long term solution to keeping these dogs and cats out of the shelter? How does waiving the adoption fee make it affordable to own a dog or cat? Are they looking at this as a long term foster solution or does the Halifax Humane Society have a plan in place for if these animals get sick or when they need their vaccinations next year?
